Our History

1977

In 1977, Mr. Ioannis Polychronopoulos founded Environmental Protection Engineering (EPE) and established the head office in Piraeus.

2005

The new factory of Environmental Protection Engineering (EPE) begins its operation at the Schisto Industrial Park (VIPAS).

2009

ERMA FIRST is founded by a team of experts with a strong background and solid knowledge in water and wastewater treatment technology for marine applications.

2018

ERMA FIRST ceremoniously opens its new branch office in Busan, South Korea, in the presence of customers, politicians, and colleagues.

2018

ERMA FIRST launches a new office in Shanghai, China, further expanding its dynamic presence in Asia.

2019

ERMA FIRST announces the acquisition of METIS, a leading telemetry-first company, specializing in advanced analytics and performance monitoring for the maritime industry.

2020

ERMA FIRST designs and develops BLUE CONNECT, an Alternative Maritime Power solution that facilitates a vessel’s connection to a port’s electrical grid to power onboard services, systems and equipment, while at berth.

2021

ERMA FIRST expands significantly with the acquisition of the US-based oneTANK, the smallest and lowest-cost ballast water treatment system globally, designed as the ideal solution for smaller vessels and aftpeak tanks.

2021

ERMA FIRST strengthens its offering by acquiring RWO, a global leader in water treatment technologies based in Germany, bringing decades of expertise to the Group.

2024

ERMA FIRST acquires Ecochlor, a US-based company known for its innovative ballast water treatment technologies, including the versatile EcoOne Series.

2025

ERMA FIRST creates the ERMA TECH GROUP, which swiftly emerges as a global leader in sustainable maritime technologies. Within a short span, the Group has successfully executed numerous projects across shipyards in China, South Korea, Japan, and many more.
